Members of the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community face the same legal problems that everyone else in society faces. They also face an additional set of legal and social challenges -- issues particular to them involving individual, relationship and parental rights -- that those outside of the GLBT community may never even have to consider, let alone confront.
For example, the state of Texas refuses to recognize the existence of any same-sex relationship -- even one granted in another state -- thus denying to same-sex couples the same rights and protections it automatically grants to a heterosexual marriage.
Furthermore, lesbians, gay men, bisexuals and transgenders in Texas often face additional obstacles in attempting to adopt children, or gain or enforce their rights as parents or guardians.
Despite these barriers, an LGBT couple or parent can attain most of the same key rights and protections granted to heterosexuals. To protect yourself and your family, however, you need to work with a competent, informed and caring attorney who can explain your options, help you plan, and assist you in taking the actions you must take well before the need arises.
